Ultramarathon Event to Raise Funds for the Challenged Athletes Foundation
Three veteran endurance athletes, Chris Roman, Tony Portera and Jarom Thurston, will attempt to become the first known individuals to run the entire length of the Brazilian pilgrimage path known as the Caminho Da Fé (Path of Faith). Covering more than 350 miles in eight days, the Phix-fueled ultra runners will begin running the Caminho Da Fé in Cravinhos, Brazil, on January 18, 2011, and will finish in Aparecida, home of the patron saint of Brazil, on January 25. A portion of the route will be run in conjunction with the Brazil 135 Ultramarathon, the most difficult foot race in Brazil.
The Phix-sponsored group called Team 4WardMotion is running to raise funds and awareness for the Challenged Athletes Foundation® (CAF)—the goal is to raise $40,000. Established in 1997, CAF’s mission is to provide opportunities and support to people with physical disabilities so they can pursue active lifestyles through physical fitness and competitive athletics.
As a sponsor, Phix will be supporting the ultra runners’ eight-day journey. Phix Energy is an all-natural energy drink mix and herbal supplement blend of green tea , anti-oxidants, energy-restoring NADH and Yerba Maté for enhanced vigor, with added vitamins and minerals to keep the runners feeling energetic and refreshed. The attempt to accomplish something that has never before been done will coincide with the re-launch of the site www.phix.com. “We believe Phix and Team 4WardMotion are great partners as Phix is introducing a revolutionary healthy energy drink product that consumers have never had available –a natural and safe energy boost that tastes great. Team 4WardMotion is also trying to do something that no one has ever done. Although Phix is designed for the average person who needs an energy boost, we have been using it during training and will use it throughout our attempt at history” said Tony Portera. “We wanted to re-launch the website with a splash by a display of incredible energy and stamina so Team 4WardMotion was a natural fit” said Doug Brown, president of Phix, Inc. Additionally, Phix is pledging a $1 donation to Challenged Athletes Foundation for each Facebook fan that signs up for a Phix free trial. ‘Like’ Phix on Facebook for more details.
Roman, Portera and Thurston are not strangers to ultra-endurance events. Roman recently completed the famous Western States 100 Mile Endurance Run and six other 100-mile races. Additionally, Roman ran the entire length of the Erie Canal, from Albany to Buffalo, New York. Portera is a two-time finisher of the “world’s toughest footrace,” the Badwater Ultramarathon. Since 2005 he has completed 21 marathons and 39 ultramarathons—14 of which have been 100 miles in length or longer. Thurston is also a two-time Badwater finisher, as well as a three-time finisher of the Brazil 135 Mile Ultramarathon.
